The History and Evolution of Bhawaiya of Northeast IndiaIt is a common saying that no creation can ignore its present. Just as literary creation is constantly inspired by the course of events in society, so is music. Especially when that music is a folk genre like Bhawaiya, whose reach and expansion remain enviable even in this modern era. It is equally relevant today. That is why the roots of this music remain deeply embedded across the vast region of Northeast India, standing tall like a massive tree after weathering many "storms and hardships" of time. Guided by the path of evolution, it remains widely discussed and highly appreciated even now. Naturally, questions arise: how does a folk music tradition created hundreds of years ago manage to survive today? How has this musical stream evolved and kept itself alive during these turbulent times? As dedicated admirers of Bhawaiya, exploring the answers to these questions became inevitable for the co-authors. Thus began this courageous and confident endeavor to dive into this vast ocean.In searching for the roots, they have guided us toward one new direction after another. They have shown how the sacred verbal chants of incantations (mantras) gradually transformed into song lyrics over time. They have illustrated how rhythmic verses, playfully crafted during childhood games, took the form of songs through melody and beat. They have also demonstrated how the entire structure of a song genre completely changed under the weight of evolution. They have traced lullabies that, enriched by the effortless singing style of family elders, created a soothing intoxication in the minds of infants, making restless children forget their crying and drift into sleep in an instant under the spell of those musical vibrations.This is how we introduced ourselves to the "Music Therapy" of that era, which is intricately linked with Bhawaiya. Even if small in number, its significance cannot be denied. During this research journey to discover the roots of the music, they encountered another growing evolution?what literary language terms the "evolution of musical instruments"?which did not escape the sharp eyes of the skilled co-authors. Instead, they have presented it to us through flawless analysis. They have shown how ancient musical instruments (such as the Yugi instrument, Azhrai, and Dotara) were modified slightly to be used in Bhawaiya songs. Readers will understand as they progress a bit further that today's widely used Dotara is actually a modified version of an instrument originally made from bamboo and jute sticks. The text outlines how the lyrics of lesser-known dance songs, like Hadum dance or Mechini dance, integrated daily lifestyle details along with the mutual feelings of love and affection between men and women. It shows how the expressions of intense, unpolished love (Chandal Prem) once influenced this folk music, and how it gradually evolved to become universally accepted.
